PrintJ Dub’s French Onion Dip
My French Onion Dip is the BOMB. You will never buy store bought again.

Ingredients
- 4 medium white onions (sliced)
- 4 Tablespoons butter + 1 additional Tablespoon, divided
- 1/8 cup dry white wine
- 2 Tablespoons olive oil
- 2 Tablespoons dried minced onion flakes
- 1 Tablespoon dried shallot flakes
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
- 8 ounces softened cream cheese
- 8 ounces mayonnaise
Instructions
- Carmalize onions in butter. This will take close to 40 minutes to get them brown. The key is to take your time and keep the heat low.
- Once the onions have caramelized, add wine and allow to simmer another 2 minutes or so.
- Removethe caramelized onions from heat and allow to cool.
- In a separate small skillet ( I use my 6 inch cast iron skillet), pour in olive oil and add 1 tablespoon of butter.
- Heat skillet on low until the butter is melted.
- Throw the garlic in and allow to sauté for 30 seconds.
- Immediately turn your heat to high and add the dried minced shallots and dried minced onion. Do not walk away.
- Allow this garlic onion mixture to “fry” for 30 seconds, stirring constantly.
- Then immediately remove the mixture from heat. You do not want to burn this, it will make your dip bitter.
- Pour this mixture on several layers of paper towels and allow to cool.
- While the onion garlic mixture is still warm, spinkle 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt over the mixture and allow to finish cooling and draining on the paper towels.
- Mix together softened cream cheese and mayonnaise.
- Add in caramelized onions and fried onion mixture.
- Mix again.
- The flavors are so intense, you can serve this dip immediately.
- Or, you can refrigerate until ready to serve. I remove it from the refrigerator about 30 minutes before I am going to serve so that it has a spreadable consistency.
Notes
- I only use white onions for this dip. Yellow and Vidalia onions will give a sweetness that I do not care for.

September 13, 2024 6:43 pmFrench onion dip is my families favorite. After this recipe there will never be another dip made any other way. The addition of the onion flakes is genius. So so good on everything Great on a sandwich, rolled up with head lettuce. Even thinned it down and used as a salad dressing. Perfection
