Regarding my ferns…….
The question I get asked most often – How and When Should I Re-pot my Ferns.
I typically re-pot my ferns in either early spring or late summer.
I re-pot my ferns when they stop putting out new growth, dry out quickly, or their foliage starts to lose its vibrant green coloring.
This is usually a sign the ferns are root bound and not getting enough nutrients or water.
But, I will also re-pot a fern when it’s extremely healthy and not root bound.
Why?
It needs a bigger pot.

I created a video where I re-pot 4 different ferns using the same method for each one.
One of them is not root bound, but it did not put out any new growth at all during the growing season.
She is a Kimberly Queen.
One of them is seriously root bound, and needed major surgery.
She is a Macho fern.
The other two are extremely healthy, putting out tremendous new growth, and are not root bound.
But, they do need a bigger grower pot.
These girls are Boston ferns.
Watch the short video below to see exactly how I do it.

Supplies I Use
garden tarp or plastic sheeting
15 inch Flower pots for medium sized ferns
24 inch flower pots for large ferns

A couple of notes……
I briefly mentioned it in the video, but I highly recommend NOT planting your ferns in heavy iron or concrete containers.
Use lightweight fiberglass or plastic pots that you can easily turn on their sides.
Lightweight pots also allow you to push on the sides to release the ferns and won’t crack or break on you.
In addition, if your ferns are sick, I highly recommend wiping down your tools with alcohol before using them on the next fern.
This will keep you from spreading any potential disease.
I would love to know if my tutorial helped you know how and when to re-pot your ferns. Drop me a comment below and let me hear all about your success stories.
